TrackEcho uses accurate GPS location while in use, and is assisted by a web server backend system, which uses HTTP posts from the device to receive track descriptive metadata to generate START and STOP emails to nominated "trip observers". It also uses the UDP protocol to upload occasional short compressed position updates to the server when in use. Historical trip details are retained on both the device and the server (but can be deleted by the user if needed).
TrackEcho is a free app available on the Apple App Store, and is fully functional for 10 trips. It incorporates an Apple in-app purchase facility allowing "credit" for 500 trips to be cheaply purchased.
